The apex court also said that the Parliament may reconsider the definition of ‘child’ in the Indian Penal Code with context to rape.

The Supreme Court on Monday said that the Parliament may consider more stringent punishment for people convicted for rape of children.

The court was responding to an appeal demanding castration as a punishment for those convicted of child abuse. Though not giving in to the demand, the court said the Parliament could consider harsher punitive laws.

The apex court also said that the Parliament may reconsider the definition of ‘child’ in the Indian Penal Code with context to rape.

At present, ‘child’ is defined as any person below the age of 18 according to the IPC.
