WHAT IS A TRIPEPTIDE?
Glutathione is a tripeptide consisting of three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It is found in varying amounts in all cells, tissues, body fluids and organs.
Recognized as an important safeguard, the absence of glutathione can cause cells to disintegrate as a result of being attacked by free radicals. A lack of glutathione will also affect the liver and immune system negatively. By counteracting free radicals, glutathione sustains the liver so it can carry out its function of detoxifying the body. Similarly, preventing free radical damage also helps promote a healthy immune system.
Our bodies obtain glutathione in two ways: from the foods we eat and from internal production. Because of the body’s ability to process glutathione, it is not considered an “essential” nutrient. Under some conditions, though, the body’s need for glutathione is overtaken by its ability to produce it.
